Z100 Supports Wax Cabin! Dreams Do Come True!

Posted by Jennifer Gunn on

Yesterday, Z100's Elvis Duran, Bethany Watson and Danielle Monaro called me back after I sent them a text! What did the text say? It said... Something Bethany and Elvis said a few months ago changed the course of my life.

After months and months of being unhappy at a job, I started to think about making a change. The unhappiness at work started to trickle... slowly, but surely, the deep sadness and anger crept into my personal life. I was generally unhappy, bored and angry that I had let myself feel stuck. It was time to make a change, I wanted to feel like myself again!

On my way to work a few months ago, I heard Z100's cast talking about making changes. Bethany, told a story depicting her unhappiness at an old job that left her thinking about having cocktails before work. I never took the drink, but I was so unhappy I understand where she was coming from. I was desperately happy to hear her honesty.

I started making my candles after work. I did research, played around with scents, labels, names... I started to feel like myself again. This was fun! By Christmas 2016, I had sold out. To be honest, it was just friends and family, but it was a start. People started talking, posting and Wax Cabin was on its way.

Listen to my chat with Z100 above.

It's always, always important to say thank you. THANK YOU!

How To Plant in Your Empty Candle

Posted by Jennifer Gunn on

You know that feeling when you plant something and then it actually grows. Best feeling! Well we recently saw this Tasty Vegetarian video and I thought it looked simple enough. I'm awful at planting things and maintaining a garden... so many ways to go wrong for me... forget to water, snakes, bugs... But I was seeing a lot of candle vendors showing how to re use their empty candle jars and wanted to see if it was legit. Need to be honest... I tried the peppers and strawberries and only the peppers worked. Word of advice, don't skip steps that the video details.

Step 1: Watch this video above

Step 2: Warm your jar and scrape all the old wax and oil out.
Wash a few times in warm soapy water.

Step 3:
Plant and place in a sunny spot inside... then wait

Step 4: When it's starting to look crowded... transfer to a larger pot outside!

Step 5: This is yet to be seen. I will update as the weeks go by!

How to Speak Candle

Posted by Jennifer Gunn on

In every industry there's a nerdy lingo one might use. The candle industry has interesting buzz words that you might hear, but have no idea what they mean. Here's a quick guide to start talking like a wax pro...

Hot Throw
The fragrance emitted from a candle when it is burning.

Cold Throw
The fragrance emitted from a candle when it is NOT burning.

Burn Rate
The amount of wax that is consumed in 1 hour of burning with the specific wick. However, without some type of base the burn rate is difficult to evaluate.

Soy Wax
a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans.

Paraffin Wax
Made of refined petroleum; most commonly used wax in candle making.
Not a preferred wax for Wax Cabin! We use soy wax (see above).

Melt point
The temperature at which a wax will start to liquefy.

Melting pool
the wax has been heated long enough to reach the edge of the container.

Sink hole
Cavity that is formed when a wax hardens and contracts.

Carbon build up on the tip of a wick after burning.

Triple Scent
Adding 1.5 ounces of fragrance per pound of wax.
